Runescape
Publisher: Jagex
Genre: MMORPG
Runescape is a MMORPG. What distinguishes this game from all others is that it can be played on a normal net browser, and that it's totally free. The game also has very low requirements. Basically, if you can run Java, you can run Runescape. This means that you can play from anywhere, but don't expect Half-Life style graphics. You control an avatar, which means that this is your cyber-space extension of yourself on Runescape. You can dress yourself up however you'd like, choose whatever hair, and skin type. Throughout the game, you develop skills that will help you earn money and fight monsters as you go. As mentioned before, you can play for free, but there is also an option to become a member for $5.00 a month. The differences in gameplay are huge. However, the game rests solely on it's gameplay.
Gameplay
The game is surprisingly intense during combat. When you are facing a high level PK (player killer) who's dealing out loads of damage, the game gets pretty interesting. Gaining skills is also a lot of fun in the beginning. Each crafting level brings about something new to make, or new mining tools. Each combat level gains visible results to your damage and defense. However, after about level 30 or so skills-wise, the game gets extremely tedious for that skill. It gets extremely difficult to raise crafting skills after level 30-35 since the requirements for each level begin to go up significantly. Another tedious part of the game is going from one section of the map to another, since it takes nearly 10 minutes of pure travel to do a 2 minute task in the city you want, then travel back. Overall though, the gameplay is pretty good considering this is a free game.
Music/Sound
Not impressive to say the least. However, you'll have the option of having no sound at all to reduce computer requirements. The sound of the game is just enough to let you know what's going on. Swinging of swords, mining rocks, crafting armor all produce a unique sound, but you'll tone it out over time. Music is acquired as you roam the world of Runescape, like if I were to go to the desert, I'd get the desert soundtrack. If you are going to listen to the music, it'll keep your attention on the game, just remember to set the music to LOOP.
Graphics
Again, not impressive considering the technology at work. This also means though, that ANYONE can run the game. The creatures in the game aren't gonna terrify you either, but they are pretty distinct and are pleasant on the eyes. You have the option to reduce the brightness in the game, which is very nice for those who can't see as well. Overall not very impressive, but it gets the job done.
Controls
Not much to speak on here, just mouse clicking and typing to talk to other people.
Member Player vs. Free Players
As a member of Runescape, I can speak on this part. If you like to play the game Runescape for more than 2 hours a day, DEFINATELY join as a member. It's only $5.00 a month (about 15 cents a day) and it'll bring out the best in the Runescape world. You'll have access to 4 more skills, as well as 3 times the map that free players have. There are also close to 4 times the quests, as well as monsters. It'll also save you oh so much time on skills. Members have a lot more access to mines, forests, fishing areas, and dungeons than free members do, and it's a lot less crowded. I strongly encourage you to try the member's services out if you play the game a lot.
Overall
Overall the game is fun to play if you have the time and patience to play. The more you play, the more fun the game is. It takes time to gain skills, yes, but once you gain them (particularly combat, ranging, or wizardry) it's well worth the time. Hope you found this review to be helpful, and I'll see you on!
