In my opinion, a large number of Christian denominations don't have much substance as far as doctrine. Therefore, they spend most of their time evangelizing over-aggressively, essentially out of religious boredom. There really isn't anything else for them to do, so their "success" as a Christian is closely tied with their "success" as an evangelist - far too closely, as far as I'm concerned. As a Catholic, I've dealt with more than my own fair share of overzealously evangelistic Protestants, who feel that Catholics - although they are clearly Christians - are a top priority for conversion. Why? I honestly have no idea.
Yes, Christianity puts a large emphasis on evangelization, but also recognizes that many, many people just aren't willing to listen. Many verses in the Bible make it clear that most people won't make it into Heaven - or at least not easily. This makes it that much more important for us to help everyone we possibly can find the path to Heaven.
