There are a number of ways you can get onto the chat server.

Possibly the simplest way is to click the Chat link in the navigation bar. This will open the java irc client and, assuming you have java installed will connect you to the server. From there you just need to follow the instructions to enter a room.

You can also get your own IRC client software, one popular program being mIRC available as shareware from www.mirc.com.

To connect to the irc server using mIRC, run the program and then from the status window type:

/server irc.giveupalready.com:6667

(Ports 6667,6668,6669 and 7000 are available).

This will connect you to the server, from where you can type /join #GUA to join the main room, or /list to see the other rooms open.

When you connect to the server and you have no nickname you will be Guest#. You can set a nickname to use when running mIRC by going to

+Connect

And filling the spaces in "Nickname", and if you want, "Alternative". Alternative nick will be used when your first Nickname is in current use in the server you're connected.

Once on the server you can also use the /nick command to change your nickname, for example:

/nick Stuff

* Guest4332 is now known as Stuff

Once you have chosen a nickname you can also register it to keep for yourself via NickServ using the command:

/msg nickserv register password email.

This will register your chosen nickname and make it so that anyone using it has to identify to it. This is also done via sending a message to NickServ like so.

/msg nickserv identify password

If you register a nickname you will need to identify to it yourself too, so remember the password you choose.


In mIRC there is an option to perform certain commands on connecting "Perform on Connect", and it is possible to set it up to do these things automatically for you. Someone on the server can help you with this if you need help.

/msg nickname message
This will message a nickname via private messages, which means, only that person can read it. If that nickname is not currently in use, then it won't be sent.

/query nickname message
This will make the same as the above, but it will pop-up a window for the private message.

/whois nickname
Check your status window after this. It will produce some information about the nickname chosen such as IP address (though this is masked on the server to non IRC ops), and which channels the user is in.

/list
Will pop-up a window with the list of all channels with atleast 1 person in of the server, unless the channel is +p, or private.

/join #channel
Will make you join the channel you put.

/me text
Will appear in the channel lines as an action.

/part #channel message(optional)
Will make you leave a channel.

/quit message(optional)
Will disconnect you from the server you were.

/exit Will make you close mIRC.

~ means the channel founder. Represented with the char +q, this gives founder status to the nickname. This user has full control of the channel modes and settings, including promoting other member up to services operator. This is the highest rank within a channel.

& means service operator. Represented by +a these users are essentially in overall control of the channel. They have access to almost all the channel options.

@ means channel operator, also known as op. Represented with the char +o these users can kick, ban, and set some modes and settings.

% means channel half-operator. Represented with the char +h, this gives HOp status to the nickname. Halfops can kick and ban users among some other powers, but cannot op other users.

+ means vop or voice. Represented as +v. Voiced users can still type even when the channel is moderated (which may be done to stop flooders).


All the above symbols are local to a channel. There are also IRC ops who have control over server-wide options.

The following are common channel mode letters, along with their basic meaning.

+m Means the channel is "moderated", and only people that has voice(+v) or higher can talk.

+t Means only operators can set the topic. Without this char, or someone setting -t, anyone will be able to chane the topic.

+r Means a channel is registered already.

+n Means no external messages, this means no one outside the channel can notice or message a whole channel.

+k keyword Means when trying to join a channel someone has to put the keyword set by an operator.

+l Means the channel has a limit user set by an operator.

+p Means the channel is private, and it won't appear in the channel list of the server.

+s Means the channel is "secret", and it won't appear when using a whois command in someone in it.

Yes you can. To do this first you will need to create the room which just involves typing:

/join #roomname

Once there you must register the room with ChanServ (like NickServ, but it handles channels rather than nicknames) by typing:

/msg chanserv register #channel password description

You will be set up as channel founder and will have access to change the channel options. More information about these can be found by typing:

/msg chanserv help
