SM Stirling writes a compelling concept in his Emberverse series, starting with Dies the Fire, followed by The Protector's War and A Meeting at Corvallis. The general premise for this series is based on his Nantucket series, but essentially deals with the idea that shit goes crazy, and nearly all high-energy interactions are eliminated... the laws of physics themselves are inexplicably altered to disallow combustion engines, high explosives, and electricity from working. Fire itself works but steam, for instance, can't build to sufficient pressure to do anything particularly useful.
