Whenever I try to open folders such as my computer, my documents, or self created ones from my desktop or my start menu, windows explorer crashes on my computer. Very annoying, to open ANYTHING I have to go to start>run>browse.

I have no idea what's causing this or how to fix it. Have any of you, oh great computer whiz'es?

does it give an error report, i.e. windows explorer caused a fault in explorer.exe
then there's a couple of buttons; send error report.....don't send error report

just above these buttons should be a like to view technical info on the problem...copy all this info and save it somewhere...then enter into search engines specific portions of the report which you think identify your report...something should come up
oryou could go to microsoft knowledge base and search for your symptoms and that could work

i'm sorry i can't be of any specific help...that's the best i can do
hope everything works out

Yes, I get that error report thing. I've sent it to microsoft about 6000 times i'd say. Anyways, upon viewing the technical info I felt kind of sick. It was like 800 lines of numbers... And it couldnt let me copy/paste it either. It did, at the bottem, say "this file MAY be causing the problem." Should I go delete that file?

Do you get a reply from sending the error message?
If so then use that.

What OS are you using?

If you are using Windows XP, either Home or Professional, doesn't matter. Or if you're using Windows 2000 Professional, check the Event viewer.

RIght-click on My Computer, then click on Manage. Check for errors in the System or Application logs. Not sure which one it would be in. Use the relative information and search in Google. Something should show up.

What was the last patch, or software, that you installed? I've seen issues where uninstalling the patch, or software will fix issues like this.

I'd recommend not deleting the file, unless you know exactly what the file is. You might end up deleting some system file and have to reinstall your OS. Have you checked for viruses?

Here's something else that you might want to try:

Windows ME System Restore (http://www.helpwithwindows.com/windowsMe/system-restore3.html)

A PC came into my shop with the exact same problem the other day. About every 90 seconds explorer would crash, then reload. Actually, this is a very common problem. It usually has to do with an IE plugin (most also hook into folder view because IE and Explorer.EXE are basically linked together). Run Ad-Aware and Spybot, then post a HijackThis log and it will be all fixed. I have also found that running Ad-aware & Spybot in safe mode is much faster and easier.
