go to this thread - it details some useful websites which let you run remotely hosted forums (i.e. you just run a forum off their website)

http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=93

if you want to go more technical and have your own forums on your own website - you'll have to become a little familiar with some form of php coding
but in any case, most forum providers have a detailed help section for the newbies to the 'making your own forum' league

the make it youself forums available are; phpBB, yaBB, and there's vBulletin(which is a superior service but you have to pay for it)

If I were you I would use invisionfree forums @ invisionfree.com.
if you mean by alliance forums like the really nice ones they use vbulletin but it costs $

i think you can make some pretty awesome phpBB forums and they are free (mine is an example...i think it looks good, and i've got alotta people agreeing with that)

www.myfreebb.com is a good one. it is a phpBB forum, but you do not have to host it yourself.

I got my alliance forum hosted on a friend's server.

you can also try www.phpbb.com these are free php message board source installs for complete installs to your website. this site has complete help forums as well as a community that helps and most for free.

phpbb has several templates too so if you are not a designer you can just select and use a style.

good luck.

I personally prefer Invisionfree. It's free, easy to use, and it looks professional with many great features. No knowledge of coding required, although it can help. ;)
