View Full Version : A way to reduce server load

Ok I mentioned this idea in another thread, but I kind of think it warrents mention in it's own thread. At the start of each age, the servers are very overloaded. I realize this is due to two things:
1. More people play at once.
2. More people are clicking, people who normally don't click at all may be clicking 3000 links a day.

Here are my thoughts on one way to reduce bandwidth. For the first two weeks of an age, I think each IP address should be limited to 1000 links per day. Between week 2 and week 4, that limit would be 2000 per day. After 4 weeks, the limit could be removed. This will sharply reduce bandwidth and instability (and downtime) that the servers experience. True, it would inconviniece some players, but I think that the reduction of downtime would be an important benefit. I also that using text based advertisments rather than graphical ones would be less bandwidth intensive (and I have heard text based ads are usually more effective, thats why Google is so rich). I believe that implementing text ads and clicks at the start of an age would sharply reduce the high levels of server down time that we all experience (and complain about) at the start of each age. Bandwidth is not cheap, and this might be cheaper to do as well. True, it will reduce some of the action, but I think the fact that the servers will actually work would make it worth it, what do others think about this idea?

This wouldn't reduce server load very drastically, because people use proxies to click in the first week. In general, there aren't very many players clicking more than 3,000 links per IP at ANY point in the Age. Enforcing KoC's rules about proxying would solve the server load problem, but that's not too easy to enforce from what I hear (correct me if I'm wrong).

text based ads would be a good idea indeed, much more people click them and they load more easy.

Or they could go a step further and have a few servers onj spare for the first month, but that would cost money :P

that's very easy.
there are scripts available (download for free!)
wich checks first if you using a proxy or not.
if not you are allowed to koc.
if not it says a message that you are beeing blocked because of the proxy :ban-cha:

Or have one official clicker for the lot of us!
50000+ clicks per day
regulated by the admins they could tell if anyone was using proxi switchers as you cant click more per day than ppl playing the game:ban-cha:

One official clicker would b a good idea but there would always those who chose 2 use there own clicker 2 there advantge and that would increase the load on the server.

So get rid of the advantage
B4 you ask
the advantages of your own clicker
unregistered clicks you clam for yourself (cerbere)
tax clicks(PR)
and those that allow proxy clicks to go unchecked(all the others)
