It would be very handy.
It's one of the reasons that I have never joined a clan.
I see gold, recon and go for it.
I don't look at who is in command and it's a habit I can't break easily.

I do agree, this would be very nice. It has been asked for often as well, not quite sure why it hasn't been added. Maybe some day in the future it will be.

Until then, best thing to do is look at the Commander of the one you are attacking. ;)

These were listed as new features in Age 5
*Lowered percentage of armory that can be sabotaged
*Fixed timeout bug when attacking large armies
*Made more mercenaries available
*Up to 15 commander changes are now allowed
*Commanders can discharge officers from their armies
*Command Center displays officers' last login time
*An icon is displayed in the battlefield for people who have the same commander as you
*Players currently online are displayed in yellow on the battlefield
*New attacks on you are indicated with your mailbox indicator
*Intelligence logs are now sorted chronologically
*New weapons, forts, and sieges!
*Highest rank obtained is now recorded and displayed in the Command Center
*Old attacks and unsuccessful logs are now cleared out more often
