SOAD is ok, not one of my favorite bands though. I really like the song Aerials though. I'm really not sure what about it makes me like it so much, but yeah.

People probably stopped liking them, since like... bands don't last long most of the time, and I don't think they had too much to keep them around.

Or, they're about to bust out a major album and rock the vote. Er... world.

ElvnPsycho
6th September 2004, 09:13 AM
yes it's kinda weird, that they just like disappeared, but i think they broke up, and their is no Soad anymore :(

Loco_Loco

Aww that is a shame, I hoped they would bring out a new mega cool album, but oh well :(

ElvnPsycho

Fell of the earth?

Didn't you hear? They're making a new CD!
Yes, SOAD's one of my favourite bands too.

Oh, sorry I missed that, cool, I hope it's good! :D

Their CD will be good. All their CD's were good, I can know, I have all three of them.
Though "Toxicity" was a commercial succes, none of their albums was a disappointment and each one of them added something new to the one before.
System of a Down has grown and is still growing, soon they'll approach perfection. Each album has a slightly different style, yet every single album has that certain "System of a Down"-touch, so I think you don't have to fear and the new album will be perfect.
I'll buy it anyway.

ElvnPsycho

yeah, SOAD are a good band, they have some musical talent but the only song which has ever stuck in my head is probably Chop Suey...Thast about it

they don't own the whole rock genre but Sytem of A Down is a great band nonetheless. They have a very distinct sound which is good for any band and i like at how the end of Aerials there is a big musical kind of thing.

Have you ever tried to listen to any others? "Chop suey" was their only commercial succes, but their musical succes goes on with all their other songs.
"Prison sex", "Jet pilot", "Darts", "CUBErt", "Nüguns", "Mr.Jack", "Highway song", "Science",...
I could go on for days when listing their good songs. In fact, I cannot think of one disappointing song they should have made.
Their sound is other then the sound of all those silly Nu-metal and pop punk bands these days.
You should give them a chance and listen to one of their albums. May I reccomend "System of a Down[self-titled]"

6th September 2004, 11:36 AM
Darkstar, that tune is named 'Arto' and is an important tune in Armenia, which is where all the members are from par 1.
All their albums rock, but I like Toxicity more than the others, but I'm not sure why.
The new album is aimed at a December release, according to mtv.com.

Yeah, Chop Suey was good. SOAD is a very nice band in whole... though they don't own their genre. I like Spiders, Innervision, and Aerials too.

SOAD is very much nu-metal. They have a catchy sound, a very different sound, and some odd, yet good lyrics. They're putting out a lot of albums though, and that could be good or bad, depending. It may overexpose them. On the other hand, it could just be an outlet for a large number of incredible pieces they have stored up.

Like a lot of other people, I started listening to them upon hearing songs like Chop Suey and Arials. Those are both good songs, but are a bit too "now" for my tastes. They're really not the type of songs I can see sticking around for a while.

Spiders is my favorite song of theirs. It's very haunting.

SoaD is another strong, well formed hard-edge band. I enjoy their music, but have heard some very horrible things about their lead singer, Serj. These terrible things didn't come from a reliable source, but they were disturbing enough for me to be a bit... troubled by them. I don't want to spread rumors that are unfounded, so I will leave it at that.

If you'd had to place it under one of existing Metal sub-genres, it would be Nu-Metal indeed, but if you do not place everything in a cage, they aren't Nu-Metal at all; I'd rather call them SOAD-Metal. They have their own, ever-changing sound and it isn't Nu-Metal.

Zechs, they're nu-metal. Maybe a different breed of nu-metal, but still nu-metal.

We could keep on discussing about this for ever, but I'll try to explain you my point of view for once and for all.

The only reason System of a Down is considered Nu-metal, is because they are considered Nu-metal. Still with me? They are considered Nu-metal because there is no other metal sub-genre they fit in and Nu-metal is the pile of shit where all left-overs come.
If there would be a style fitting them more, they wouldn't be considered Nu-metal, but since they have their own, distinct sound, there is no style existant that fits them.
Just like TOOL or other bands, they have their own sound, but since the square thinking society of today absolutely has to place them in a genre, they're considered Nu-metal.
Do you understand me now?

And if you absolutely want to call them Nu-metal, then they are a sub-genre in the sub-genre, if you understand me.

Oh, by the way. I've heard Tool described as "Progressive rock" lol.

You're welcome, I like wasting my precious time explaining people my views and theories upon some of my favourite bands :)

TOOL "progressive rock,"... I heard that one too :p it's hard to tell what they are, since they changed a lot from "Opiate" to "Lateralus" and they probably changed even more in their last album, which I didn't have the pleasure of hearing yet.
TOOL is just like System of a Down something of their own, possibly even more then SOAD. I am not going to try to persuade you of that fact, I think you're smart enough to see that yourself :)
If they are Nu-metal, then they are at least one of the bands that has forged the sub-genres base.

Their first album, Mesmerise will be released and then the second one Hypnotize will be released like a week or a month or so later, I don't know the exact date for that but I skimmed the article in Revolver about it being so. It is sort of like the deal with the Guns 'n Roses full length double release a long time back except that was on the same day.

(Hate Elmdor I do...Why should you not?):ccc2:

EDIT:

the first which will be released in May (Mesmerise) and the second around Christmas (Hypnotize)

And according to their site...May 17 for Mesmerise.

I'm sure we already have a thread about this but meh, whatever.

The new album is fucking amazing, my favourite is BYOB, but every song on there is fucking great, apart from the intro maybe.

They aren't my favourite, but my job description forces me to like one band that emerged in the nu-metal era (not saying they are nu-metal though), so I like them.

I own all their albums, and they're all good, especially Toxicity.

Threads merged. As penguin said, there's already a longstanding thread for SOAD.

Now, for my opinion...

I think the new album is good, but not the best. Toxicity owns all SOAD albums, with System of a Down following close second. Toxicity can just really get you going. Come on, how can you not bang your head when Bounce comes on? And one of the songs (I forget the name, goes something like "Why don't you know that you are, my, child") is so incredible. And don't forget Chop Suey and Arials!

Negative S
22nd May 2005, 09:33 PM
True they are all great but the real question is how will the second half of the mezmerize album stand against them all. MEzmerize is only the first half of the album. This september the second half, Hypnotize, will be relaeased then and then we can compare them all.

My favorite song on mezmerize would have to be Question!. It just has that feeling that makes you want to do something hard core.....like get a killamonjaro on halo 2. That song would do good in a flash video for Seregon actualy.

Humbard1
23rd May 2005, 06:40 AM

I believe that song is called Forest. The Toxicity album is good, but the self-titled just seems the most like System to me. It's got the most unique songs and just completely dominates.

Seguro
23rd May 2005, 07:05 AM
I liestened to the song... While they go back to their roots and not making "just really hard and heavy songs" still I found some musical discrepancies, but in the end they strangely get away with it.

Altough i won't be able to purchase their new album at least I'm going to give a good critic to the band for not selling out.

BTW Steal this album doesn't count as an Lp, is kinda more like a rarities compilations

DemonBoy: That answer depends on who you ask. I think they have a lot of nu-metal tendencies, in part of the vocals, as well as in the guitar parts. However, they do well with simplicity in instrumentation, and whichever one of them writes their lyrics is a genius. They're masterful at political satire.

The music is usually very heavy, but of course they also have their slower songs (<3 Arials). The vocals are sometimes soft and smooth, sometimes harsh and screamy. Very new-rock, if not nu-metal.

"My cock is much bigger than yours!"

I love there new album, this seems way more listenable than there previous albums. While all there other ones rock you can easily have this on a continuously loop and its still good.

Currently i am in love with the chourus of violent pornography, its just brilliant. Everything is brilliant, its well worth the money.

DemonBoy do a search on google, find there homepage and listen to there samples, they did have byob as a sample on there homepage

System of a Down rock.

In my opinion, Toxicity is their greatest album, followed closely by Steal This Album.

Can't say I think Mesmerize lives up to their earlier work, though.

Decenco
27th May 2005, 04:48 AM
Mezmerize was nothing special. Some of the songs had their moments. Toxicity or their Self Titled release would have to be my favourite. All there albums are pretty weird though.

Perad
27th May 2005, 06:08 AM
Mezmerize is more poppy and sounds a lot of there tracks sound like they have a place at a party. Previous SOAD albums have been full of politically influenced songs and lyrics. This while it carries the air of discontent about the US is alos full of catchy chorus' and its just brilliant.

I can understand what people are saying about previous albums being better but at the same time i feel that this is a change in direction, hypnotise is coming out later in the year and i get the feeling that this will be different to mezmerise. Track one starts with welcome to the soldier side, maybe thats a hint that hypnotise will be a take on another side of things.

Well the first four songs, including the intro, have these meanings:

1 Intro - Anti-war
2 B.Y.O.B. - Anti-war (specifically Iraq war)
3 Revenga - Revenge and sensless killing
4 Cigaro - Mocking egotistical people

Those are the four I had time for, but I'll read the other lyrics later.

I was happy to see the changes in Mezmerize, the first three were way too similar, they got biring after awhile. (*smacks self* HOW DARE YOU TALK BAD OF SoaD!)
Some of the songs in Mezmerize kinda sucked though, (Old School Hollywood is one)
But most were good.

way to contradict yourself, self-contradictor!

anywho, you American folks are lucky bastards if you get to see one of their Mezmerize tour shows, with a great band like The Mars Volta and and above-mediocre band like Bad Acid Trip as guest appearances.

penguinmaister
15th June 2005, 01:18 PM
I saw them yesterday in Mancheter, they rocked like a flying rock.

The Mars Volta weren't there, we go the 'Matchbox B-line Disaster', who, are the wowrst band in the world, throughout their set, everyone in the moshpit just stood there, twas rather funny.

Anyways, the band was shithot, they played most of Toxicity (all bar 2 or 3) a few off the first album, a few of Steal This Album! and some of Mezmerize.

They didn't played enough Mezmerize for my liking, but still, some awesome shit, like a robot speaking part of Sugar and War.

It was cool, and they did a little mini-acoustic version of Bounce and Cigaro.

Their new one, 'Mezmerize' isn't too good in my opinion, just doesn't have what the other albums did. 'Steal this album' was failry decent. 'Toxicity' was definately their hour. Was a great album and very complete. The self titled release was also pretty good. Overall, I'd say each album has it's moments (except Mezmerize) but I'd have to choose Toxicity. Just a very well assembled album.

penguinmaister
16th June 2005, 11:18 AM
I'm sure this'll get merged into the other SOAD thread (Zero Hour's cool like that) but what the hey.

I love Mezmerizqe best, but only just, Toxicity runs it a close second.

There isn't a bad song on Mezmerize, Jet Pilot and X kinda spoil that album a bit for me, and the other two are still great.

I can't believe no one has found the real meaning of cigarro.

I mean, the title refers to Freud's "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar".

It relates the concept of bigger missiles just being penis envy, and that these giant long hard chunks of metal are just extensions of leader's penises.

There was a big thing with that idea back in the day,
you could even buy posters to that effect,
but they'd probably be banned now.
