View Full Version : The Insiders Guide to GuA (an FAQ)
4th September 2004, 10:50 PM
This is the old FAQ. A true masterpiece. I didn't make it, but whoever did deserves a firm handshake or some other manly form of appreciation.
Update: This incredible work was created by TBG.
TOPThe old Ultimate FAQ, which has been in service for a year, is out of date. I hope this here thread is a worthy replacement. You should find the answer to any questions you might have in here.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the rules (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=2)?
The rules of Give Up Already (http://www.giveupalready.com/) are explained here (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=2). They're pretty much common sense. You should also read the Terms of Service (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=39).
Posting a unique link for any game, having it in your signature or homepage is not allowed. This forum is for discussing KoC, not getting clicks. The KoC administrators are the ones who've asked for this rule. Posting your link can get you reported to them. To make things fair, no unique links for any games are allowed, including Outwar.
Pornography isn't allowed here. Posting a picture, or a link to pornography anywhere will get you banned. You don't even get warned.
2 What are the coloured bars at the side of my post?
Those are stats. Itís something that was added to the forum a long time ago. It was supposed to be used for role-playing in the Battle Arena, but most people don't use them in there anymore. Stats are affected in many different ways. You can get your max values by clicking update stats at the top left of the main page. You can get them filled by clicking on request refill, which is right below update. There was an announcement explaining them, but it's gone. I'll quote it below.

Ok. I'll let you all in on a few of the things that affect your stats:
HP is primarily affected by the average number of posts per day
MP is primarily affected by the average post length
PP is primarily affected by the number of days since you joined
Think of it this way:
HP is what you do - how many posts you make each day.
MP is sort of your intelligence - how long your posts are.
PP is like stamina - how long you've hung around.
Now, there are other things that affect your stats:
All stats are multiplied by your COMMITMENT ranking. In other words, if you've got a commitment ranking of 50, then your stat would be 50% of what it could be. If your commitment ranking goes up slightly, then you'd have slightly higher stats.
All stats are also multiplied by your level, of course.
All stats are finally multiplied by a number - this number depends on your element. For instance:
The element "BONE" adds the following multipliers:
Meaning that your final HP is multiplied by 1.2, your final MP is multiplied by 1.4 and your final PP is multiplied by 0.9. (Note: The element "bone" doesn't actually exist - this is an example.)
Your level is determined now by a series of things:
Number of posts, Average length of time on per day, Average length of posts, Number of days since you joined AND commitment ranking.
With this new system, your stats can go DOWN. This is important to note:
If you start posting a bunch of one-word posts, your stats will go DOWN. If you start losing commitment, your stats will go DOWN.
The average length of time that you're on each day doesn't affect anything but your level, and it does so in a very minute way - you should not notice it unless you are a newbie.
I hope this helps to explain things.
Click here to increase the max value of your stats (must have at least one post). (http://www.giveupalready.com/update.php?action=doupdate)
Click here to fill up the bars (might take a while for it to happen). (http://www.giveupalready.com/refill.php)
3 What is the Battle Arena (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17)?
The Battle Arena (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17) is a place where you can pretend to be somebody youíre not, which is called role-playing. You type out posts telling what your character (the guy youíre pretending to be) does. Most people prefer to do things such as make up battles and quest for items and stuff, although you can do basically anything you want. I suggest you view the threads with the word Sticky beside them in that forum before posting. If you want to get a better view of what battles and quests are like, look at some already running. I suggest you read this (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=80) before posting.
4 Can I post my Kings of Chaos unique link?
No, you canít. You canít post any unique links, or ids for any games. You canít put the link in your signature or as your homepage either. They are automatically blocked out, however you'll still get in trouble for attempting to post it, as people can still see your id. You can't even post your link in the Advertising forum.
5 How do I change my nickname on Give Up Already?
You can only get your nickname changed by asking an administrator to do it for you. You can only have one name change per account, so use it wisely. Here (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=409) is where name changes are posted.
6 How do I delete my Give Up Already account?
You canít. Just change the email of it and log out to make a new account with the same email. You can request to get your account banned, but there isn't much point.
7 How do I delete my Kings of Chaos account?
In your command centre there is an option at the bottom right of the page to change your email/password, reset, or delete your account.
8 How do I get a picture under my username in my posts?
That is called an avatar. You can get it by going into UserCp (http://www.giveupalready.com/usercp.php?), then clicking Edit Options (http://www.giveupalready.com/profile.php?do=editoptions). At the bottom there is a button with Change Avatar (http://www.giveupalready.com/profile.php?do=editavatar) on it. You can either upload one from your hard drive, or link to one that is already online. There are now custom avatars you can choose from.
9 How do I make words and pictures appear under my posts?
That is called a signature. You can edit it by going into UserCp (http://www.giveupalready.com/usercp.php?), and choosing Edit Signature (http://www.giveupalready.com/profile.php?do=editsignature). A large white box in the middle is where you can type your desired signature. Keep it under 80 kilobytes and at a decent length. Make sure there are no unique links or pornography in it, either.
To put a picture in your signature you need to do a few things. First you need a link to the image. You can't have pictures from your hard drive unless you upload them somehow. You can get the link, or URL of an image by right clicking and selecting properties. Highlight the text beside Address and paste it in your signature area. The second step is adding and around the link. goes directly before it, while goes directly after it.
TL What is The Realm of TerrŠk'Lina (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=16)?
It's a more serious version of the Battle Arena (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=17). You should read the stickies and become more familiar with the Battle Arena before posting in The Realm of TerrŠk'Lina.
Here is a look at The World of TerrŠk'Lina (http://www.giveupalready.com/terraklina/)
Before you can post there you have to make a character. There are several stickies in the character creation forum that should guide you through it.
com What is Commitment and who can change it?
Commitment is a way of telling how committed to quests and battles in the Battle Arena you are. It directly affects your stats. You can raise other people's commitment when they post in a thread that you've created in the Battle Arena. If they go inactive, then you can lower it. If they help your quest or battle, then raise it.
All stats are multiplied by your COMMITMENT ranking. In other words, if you've got a commitment ranking of 50, then your stat would be 50% of what it could be. If your commitment ranking goes up slightly, then you'd have slightly higher stats.
warn How does the warning system work?
If a moderator catches you breaking the rules, he or she will give you a warning. A warning is just a PM that is viewable to everybody and is recorded. There is a stat called "Warnings" that shows the number of times a person has been warned. There are five types of warning: informational, low, medium, high, and critical. You can find more information about warnings in the rules (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=2). Warnings are disabled two or three months after they are given by the Warnings Administrator.
unban How do I get un-banned?
If you deserved to be banned, then you'll never be un-banned. You had plenty of chances (unless you posted porn). If you think you didn't deserve to be banned, then contact an administrator (http://www.giveupalready.com/showgroups.php?s=) (the top group - in red). There's the posting a link to a site that turns to porn problem. I guess the only advice is to watch what you post.

How do I view the number of posts people have made in a certain thread?
Click on the number of posts. It is opposite the thread title, the second column from the right. It'll pop up a list of usernames with the number of posts in the thread by them beside the nick.
race How do I change my race in Kings of Chaos?
You can change your race at anytime, but you have to reset your account to do it. At the bottom right of the main page there are three links. One of them is to reset account or change race, although to change race you have to do the former. You can also change your name and password while doing this. You could always delete your account and create a completely new one if you want. The only thing this will do is change your account id.
10 How do I put pictures in my signature?
I explained it with the signature part, but because it's so commonly asked I think it deserves its own section. Unlike avatars, signature images canít be uploaded. Type linktoimage Replace linktoimage with the link to the image. You can get the link of the image by right clicking and choosing properties.
11 Can I advertise my forum/website?
You can put a link to your forum/website in your signature or as your homepage, but you canít post it. There is an Advertising forum (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=41) where you can post your favourite forums/websites. You can't put unique links or pornography in your signature or anywhere else, including the Advertising forum.
12 How do I become a moderator?
Be a good member. Posting ďThis should be closedĒ in bad threads doesnít make you look good either. Report the post either by the link in the bottom of the post or by sending a private message to a moderator of that forum. Posting in a helpful manner to the person who made the bad post or thread is also appreciated, however simply saying "this is spam," or "you're an idiot" is not. This thread (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=237) explains in better detail how you might go about becoming a moderator.
13 Why was my signature suspended?
It was either over the limit, which is 80 kilobytes, very long, or had a unique link in it (if it had porn, you'd be banned and the signature would have been edited). Fix the problem and send a Private Message to an administrator to get it un-suspended.
14 How do I change the title under my username?
Thatís called your Custom User Text. It takes a certain number of posts and day to be able to use it. Eventually itíll appear in your UserCp (http://www.giveupalready.com/usercp.php?) under Edit Profile (http://www.giveupalready.com/profile.php?do=editprofile) as an option after you make a certain number of posts and have been a member for a certain amount of time.
15 How do I change the thing below my Custom User Text?
You canít. Only an administrator can, and they wonít. It is your User Group, so you can tell who is a moderator or above.
16 Why doesn't this guy have a User Group?
Sometimes a member won't have a User Group. If this happens to you simply sending a Private Message to an administrator should get the problem solved. As for other members it isn't really a big deal. Just ignore it.
17 How do I get an element?
You can change your element in your UserCp (http://www.giveupalready.com/usercp.php?) under Edit Profile (http://www.giveupalready.com/profile.php?do=editprofile).
18 What is a UserCp (http://www.giveupalready.com/usercp.php?)?
At the top left of the screen on any page on Give Up Already, there is a bar with a bunch of tabs on it. It's just below the Give Up Already banner. The second tab from the left is called UserCp (http://www.giveupalready.com/usercp.php?s=). It is where you can edit your profile, options, avatar, etc. You can also send/recieve Private Messages from here.
19 What do you do if you have a question?
You already did the right thing, and are reading a FAQ. If you have a question, look around through the Rules and FAQs (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=3) and you'll most likely find your answer. If you can't, or it is unclear, then send a Private Message (http://www.giveupalready.com/private.php?s=) to a moderator, super moderator, or administrator. If they can't give you an answer, then there probably isn't one - making a thread about it won't help anything.
20 What is the Clan Forum (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=18) and what does it have to do with Kings of Chaos?
The clan forum has nothing to do with Kings of Chaos. If you are looking for Kings of Chaos clans, go to the Round Table (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=40). Donít make threads in the round table asking for an alliance to recruit you, search for an alliance you like. If everybody made a thread asking for an alliance to join, there would be a lot of threads.
21 Why are my weapons gone on Kings of Chaos? (What is sabotage?)
They were sabotaged. Sabotage is a feature that was added in Age 2. There's a sticky (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=88) in the Barracks forum about it.
23 Where can I whine about sabotage?
There is a thread in the Great Hall (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=36) forum where you can whine about it. Donít spam the rest of the Kings of Chaos section with threads whining about it.
25 What is spam?
Spam is actually an acronym for stupid pointless annoying message. The point is that nobody appreciates it. Common sense should tell you what would be spam, but I'll give a few examples.
Posts with no message. That includes gibberish, blank posts, multiple posts of the exact same thing, and random words of comments.
Off topic posts can be considered spam, and is pretty much the same as random words or comments. Chatting is pretty much off topic.
26 Do warnings go away?
Yes, over time they might (two to three months, maybe longer). This is not automatic; it is at the warnings administratorís discretion. Your best option is to never get warned in the first place.
27 Why does there need to be pop ups or banners?
People pay the owner of the site money to have their ads displayed. The owner can then use that money to pay for the site, which he or she probably couldnít afford otherwise. Either put up with it or leave.
28 Can I post pornography or hentai?
Absolutely not. Posting that will get you banned, instantly. There are younger members on this board.
29 Where can I put my stats for my Battle Arena character?
Thereís a sub forum (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=42) in the Battle Arena for stats. Old practice was putting it in your signature, in the Battle Arena, and later Miscellanies. Either make a web page or use the Character Information forum.
30 What was the "RPG Forum (Beta)" forum?
It was a forum that normal members couldn't access and was used to test a new system. The forum has been deleted and whatever was going on in there no longer exists.
31 What are RPG Beta Testers?
They could post in the RPG Forum and are now just normal members with a different title that haven't been fixed yet.
32 What is "Create a Campaign?"
It had to do with the RPG Forum and now has no purpose, if it's even still there.
4th September 2004, 10:56 PM
Who owns the forum?
Tau and Krystin own and run the forum. Valkhorn created it in August of 2002 to replace his old forum called Direct Downloads. He gave it to Ithaqua sometime in April or May of 2003. Ithaqua got tired of running it in January of 2004, so Tau bought it from him. Tau married Krystin, and now they run it together.
34 What is a mass prune?
Itís an efficient and quick way of deleting a large number of posts, sort of like dynamite to blowing up a building. Therefore, in the wrong hands it is dangerous. There have been a couple of supermoderators with this privilege who have abused it, causing a lot of people to lose posts. The last prune was in June 2003, when somebody guessed the password of a supermoderatorís account and caused havoc with it. Don't get too worried about it happening again - legal action was taken.
35 How do I get the Alpha/Psi/Void/Octopus/Omega/Ice/Theta elements?
You don't. Alpha and Psi might be given out in contests, but you wonít be getting any of the rest.
39 How do I use "vB Code?"
Doing that type of thing is the same here as on just about any other forum.
The Official list can be found here: http://www.giveupalready.com/misc.php?do=bbcode
The Ultimate FAQ, however, goes though many more examples. In these examples, square brackets have a . at the beginning - this is so that the board doesn't recognise it as a code. It allows you to see what is written, rather than the final output (examples of final output are also given).
[.b]Text[/b] Makes words appear in bold.
[.u]Text[/u] Underlines text
[.i]Text[/i] Makes letters slant. Called italics
Note: You can mix codes. So [.i][.b][.u]text[/b][/u][/i] will work. See?
[.img]Link[/img] Put a URL (web address) between the tags to an image to make it appear. A lot of forums have images disabled so it will show as a link to the image instead.
[.url]Link[/url] You don't need to use this tag, as it will be automatically added to any links. If you uncheck "Automatically parse URLs: automatically adds [.url] and [/url] around internet addresses." before you reply it won't automatically do it.
For example: [.url]www.disney.com[/url] gives you www.disney.com
[.url=www.disney.com]This is text that will take you to a fun website.[/url] If you want to mask a link with text. Clicking on the text will make the link specified open. You can use vB Code on the text if you wish (itallics, bold, change the size, that kind of thing), although it's automatically underlined as a url.
For example: I don't actually like disney. (www.disney.com)
[.url=Insert destination URL here][.img]Insert Image URL here[/img][/url] That is what you do to make a clickable image. Replace the first link with the website, and the second link to the image.
[.EMAIL]Email[/EMAIL] Makes email addresses clickable. I think this is also automatic.
[.EMAIL=Email]Text[/EMAIL] You can mask email links just like you can mask website links.
Link (Email) Image link to email.
You can put codes in here.
For php codes.
If it's been a few posts since the person you're addressing in your post made his/her post, then take the text from their post and quote it using these tags.
It creates a bulleted list.
You can have as many points as you want.
A new bullet only appears after a , so you can play around.
Using list=a will output lettered bulletpoints. Example:
This is the first point in the list
This is point B
[.super]Text[/super] Can be used to make exponents and stuff like that.. x^2 = x2
[.spoiler]Text[/spoiler] The text in a spoiler will not appear until you put your mouse over the box. Useful if you are talking about a movie or a book and don't want to give away crutial plot points.
[.sub]Text[/sub] Same as superscript but makes text appear at the bottom.
[.FONT=arial]Text[/FONT] Different style of text.
[.FONT=times new roman]Text[/FONT] Another different style.
[.FONT=courier new]Text[/FONT] Another...
[.FONT=century gothic]Text[/FONT] That's all of them.
[.size=#]Text[/size] Allows you to make text bigger or smaller. Replace # with a number from one to seven. Two is the default size.
Size=2 (Default size)
Size=8 (As you can see, there is no difference between Size=7)
Text Changes the colour of text. Replace colour either with a name of a colour ([.color=green] for example). You can also put random letters in there, including your username, and get a colour. Using [colour=...] doesn't work. Below is a list of the default tags, although any letters will word beside color=.
Some might be hard to see. Highlight them.
Centers the text. Right align is a little lower down.
Text Strikes through text. If you want people to see mistakes you made, or something.
Although you don't have to use it for that.
# Creates a line through your post just like the line that devides posts from signatures. Can be used for various things. There is no limit to the number as far as I can tell, however it must be a whole number of one or above. Replace # with a number.
Note: The size of these lines are measured in pixels by height (top to bottom), therefore example the rather thick line above that visually represents 100 is infact 100 pixels in height.
A Using this you can link to parts in a post. The part you want to link to is below.
1 This is where clicking the above will take you. Make sure whatever you put after iurl=# matches (Replace the 1, not the #) what is in the bookmark tags. It doesn't have to be a number. TEST[/list]
4th September 2004, 11:00 PM
Why did you make five posts in a row for this?
When I made this there was a maximum of 10 000 characters per post. This FAQ is bigger than that. Now the limit is 25 000, so I can just edit new info into the posts.
36 What are the stars under peopleís names?
Those are little rewards for getting a certain post count. The first you get with 1000 posts, the second with 2500. 5000, 7500, and 10 000 are the numbers required for the other three stars. There is also thirteen bars that fill up before you get your first star. I'm not quite sure at what number of posts they increase. If you care enough you can find out for yourself.
37 The site doesnít look very good to me; can I change its appearance?
Yes, you can. That is called changing skins, and you can do it by going into Edit Options in your UserCp (http://www.giveupalready.com/usercp.php?s=). Right at the bottom above Change Avatar, there is a drop down menu. This is your Style Set. You can choose from eleven options.
38 The times are different than mine! Can I fix that?
Yes, you can. Go into Edit Options in your UserCp (http://www.giveupalready.com/usercp.php?s=), and at the bottom you will see Time Offset, and a drop down menu below it. Choose the one that corresponds with your time zone.
wWhat is sabotage immunity?
It means you can't get sabotaged or spied on Kings of Chaos. Once you have 130 000 Covert Action you are immune. More information can be found here (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=88).
eWhy is Kings of Chaos not working? Why am I not getting Attack Turns/Turn Based Gold/Unit Production? (Not that this is the case, but it happens often enough.)
Kings of Chaos might be experiencing some difficulties. The problems will last at most a few hours. Just be patient, and everything will be back to normal soon. No need to go make a thread about it, everybody knows already.
rCan I put unique links for games other then Kings of Chaos in my signature?
No, you can't. No unique links of any kind.
tHow do I hack somebody's account?
Nobody "hacks" anybody, they just guess the person's password. Make sure you have a secure password so this doesn't happen to you! "asdf," "qwer," or using your username for a password is a VERY BAD IDEA!
yWhere can I post my Kings of Chaos unique link?
uHow do I make code not transform so I can show people how to do it?
You stick a tag in it.
Text, instead of this:
oCan I speak languages other then English?
You can, but all of us guys who can't speak anything but English don't appreciate it. If you managed to register on here and can play Kings of Chaos, I'm sure you can read and type English well enough to participate without using your native language.
pWhat does it mean to be banned?
It means you can't access your account. That means you can't post, or do anything else but log in or out. People are banned because they break too many rules too many times. Banning is permanent. You can always create a new account, but the best option is to not get banned in the first place.
aWhat is exile?
It's a temporary ban that lasts from one to two weeks. You can't post or do anything in exile. You're put into exile for the same reasons as you are banned, however to a slightly lesser extent.
sWhat is stasis?
Stasis is no longer used, but the description is below.
You get put into stasis for the same reason as the above two, however to an even smaller extent. You can't create threads or edit your profile; all you can do is post replies. It, like exile, is temporary, lasting one to two weeks.
dWhat is an IP Ban?
It is when your IP address is banned. That means you won't be able to access Give Up Already from the banned connection. If you get banned too many times, you will be IP banned to prevent you from creating new accounts. If you evade that, your new IP will be banned. Your best option is to never get banned at all.
fWhere can I introduce myself?
There is an Introduction Forum, which is where this thread is located. You can create a thread there to welcome yourself to the forums.
gHOW DO I GET CLICKS IF I CAN'T POST MY LINK HERE?
Join a Kings of Chaos alliance in the Round Table. Give your friends the link. You could spam it here, but nobody will click it, you'll probably get warned, and maybe even sabotaged, or reported for spamming the link to the Kings of Chaos administrators. It's up to you to find ways of getting it clicked.
hAre Give Up Already administrators involved with Kings of Chaos?
No, they are not, aside from playing the game. Kings of Chaos administrators are different people all together.
jCan I advertise in my signature?
Yes, as long as it isn't a unique link.
kDo moderators and above get their own special text colour?
Yes, they do. However, you might not have known that EVERYBODY gets their own colour, not just moderators and above. Try it out by typing text It works not just with nicks, but any word, as long as it isn't too short (note: only standard colors appear in many browsers). Here's some examples:

jjWhat are reputation points?
They are a system of respect on the board. A member rating system of sorts. For each 100 points that you gain, you will get another green box next to the word "Reputation" (below your post count to the left of every post)
kkHow do I get reputation points?
When you post, members may choose to rate your post by giving you a positive or negative reputation point for it. Obviously negative reputation points will be received for particularly poor posts, and positive ones for particularly good ones. When they give these points they have the option of submitting a couple lines of text as well, perhaps telling you what they liked and/or didn't like about the post.
Reputation points are anonymous, but often members will sign their name in the comment box to let the recipient know who they are.
When you receive reputation points, they appear in your User CP (http://www.giveupalready.com/usercp.php?) with any comments that the member left.
llHow can I give reputation points?
There is a small scale on the bottom left of each post that looks like this (http://www.giveupalready.com/images/buttons/reputation.gif). Click it, and a box comes up that looks like this (http://www.giveupalready.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=548). You can now choose to add or subtract reputation for this post, and leave a comment (if you wish).
mmWhat is reputation power?
It is the amount of reputation that you add or subtract to someone's total reputation every time you rate one of their posts.
nnHow do I increase my reputation power?
For every 100 reputation points, every 1000 posts, or every year on the boards, your reputation power automatically increases by 1. Also referring other people to the site, gains you reputation power.
In addition to this certain usergroups have a minimum reputation power
ooI cannot give reputation to some people. Why?
You cannot keep giving (or subtracting) reputation to/from the same person. A certain amount of time must pass before you can give reputation to the same person again. Furthermore, you must adjust the reputation of several other members before you can give it to the same person again. This is to stop abuse of the reputation system - friends 'repping' friends, and that kind of thing.
ppSomeone has been flaming me via the reputation messages, but I don't know who. What can I do?
Tell and smod or an admin. We can see who has given you reputation and can see the associated messages. We can also issue warning for abuse of the reputation system, and take further action if necessary.
qqWhy is my reputation disappearing?
It's not. The list in the User CP only holds your 15 most recent reputation adjustments - after that you just don't see them anymore. But they are still there, adding to your total reputation. I assure you.
rrWow, what an awesome summary of the confusing reputation system! How can I ever repay you?
Nothing would make me happier than seeing you test out your new knowledge. Give it a try on this post right here. ;)
ssYou have an arcade? I thought this was a forum!
Yup. Well, we have an arcade section recently updated with a whole load of new games. Click the 'Arcade' link at the top of the page, and choose a game to play it. All time high scores are recorded, as well weekly high scores and personal bests. These are all easily accessable from the Arcade homepage (http://www.giveupalready.com/arcade.php?).
ttNice comics on the front page. Can I submit one?
You bet you can. Make it yourself, and you can submit it here (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=3176). Alternatively, if you want to get a little feedback on your comics before submitting them, you can make a thread in WebComic Central (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=127), a subforum of the Art Gallery, where people will be more than willing to give you tips, advice, or just praise.

What is a Moderator?
A person given the ability to edit threads in certain forums. It's their job to enforce the rules and keep the forum a clean place for those of us who don't wish to post on a board filled with "fjfhffjhfjhfghfjhjhjhghfg" posts. They're most commonly referred to as mods. You can tell who is a mod by looking under their Custom User Text.
cWhat is a Super Moderator?
A Super Moderator, most commonly referred to as smod, is a person who can moderate on any forum, and can ban/exile members. You can tell who is a super moderator by looking under their Custom User Text.
vWhat is an Administrator?
Administrators are the people who run the board. They control the behind-the-scenes part of GUA (if you understand "root admin" access level of a forum site, this is the same thing). They can do everything a mod/smod can do plus extra functions. They can also create boards and make other people moderators. They can also edit warnings and change username. Most people call them admins. They have no relation to Kings of Chaos. A lot of the administrators edited their User Group field, but if it says anything other then Banned/Member/Moderator/Super Moderator then you can assume it's an admin.
nWho is a Kings of Chaos Administrator?
I'm sure if you hunt through the Kings of Chaos website long enough you'll find a link to their email. NONE of the Give Up Already administrators have anything to do with Kings of Chaos, not even Tau.
mCan I edit posts in a closed thread?
No, you can't.
aaWhere did the name Give Up Already come from?
If I'm ever motivated enough to find Valkhorn's posts about it, I'll quote it here. Some people say it was from arguments, but Valkhorn says it was just a random phrase.
bbWhere did the name Kings of Chaos come from?
You can find the answer here (http://www.kingsofchaos.com/aboutus.php).
With a domain name, you must have a good site design. Black on White with a table does not qualify. So, Nick, the guy who sits next to Aman and draws straight through AP US history, was brought in to do site design. In addition to a new design, KoC needed a name. Up until that point, KoC had just been, "Chaos". Intimidating isn't it? Well, www.chaos.com was taken. So, our new task was to come up with Chaos's new name. www.[new name here].com. We came up with many possibilities. www.ReignOfChaos.com, www.RainOfChaos.com, www.LordsOfChaos.com, www.ChaosReign.com, www.KingOf.US. Until finally we settled on KingsofChaos. An added benefit of this name, was that you could shorten it to KoC. And K o C just sounds awesome.
ccCan I post links to ROM sites?
No ROMs or illegal things of any sort. Read in the Terms of Service (http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?t=39).
ddHow do I link to individual posts?
First, you must know this link:
Now, to link to a post you replace both @s with the post ID. You don't touch the # or anything else. You can get the ID of a post by quoting it and taking the number in the link in your address bar and replacing the @s with it in the above link. An easier way to get the link is to edit the post, as it will give you the link in your address bar after returning you to the thread. Also, if you click last page it will give you the ID of the last post. You also get the ID right after posting it yourself. Unfortunately, you can't edit other people's post, so you'll often have to use the above method.
Example: The link of this post here is http://www.giveupalready.com/showthread.php?p=2334#post2334
eeWho is an administrator/moderator?
A list of all administrators/moderators can be found here (http://www.giveupalready.com/showgroups.php?s=).
efI hear there's a review section. Tell me more.
There are several, actually. All are subforums within the Entertainment and Hobbies section (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=20). Secifically, we have television (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=76), movies (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=76), books (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=77), anime (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=75), and games (http://www.giveupalready.com/forumdisplay.php?f=68) reviews RIGHT HERE ON GUA! Feel free to reply to posts in these forums.
egCan I submit a review?
Sure, but you either need to become a reviewer or submit your manuscript to a reviewer for approval. Look at the hidden usertitle (where it says member, reviewer, moderator, etc.) to see who's a reviewer. If you want to become a reviewer, talk to the Lead Reviewer who is currently whirlwind... but some writing ability is required!
ehWhat goes in a review?
Besides insightful comments about the thing being reviewed and good writing? Reviews are to be "fair and balanced" meaning that it needs to appeal to a broad audience. You should also not have any obvious negative partiality. If you're a right winger, it might not be good to submit a book review for Clinton's new biography. Or if you think all anime is lame, you probably shouldn't write reviews of anime.
Above all, remember that being a reviewer is an honor and as well as a privilege. And it should be treated with some degree of professionalism.
All reviews must also adhere to all GUA rules and the ToS. Or you're going to be banzored.
ffWhat are the little envelopes (http://www.giveupalready.com/images/folder.gif) beside threads?
At the bottom of every forum there is a description of what they mean. What isn't in the description is what a little black dot (http://www.giveupalready.com/images/dot_hotfolder.gif) on the envelope means. That means that you've posted in the thread. If it has an arrow (http://www.giveupalready.com/images/movedfolder.gif), then the thread was moved to another forum.
ggWhat are the yellow (http://www.giveupalready.com/images/on.gif) or grey (http://www.giveupalready.com/images/off.gif) arrows inside of a grey box that I see on various places on the board?
On the main page beside forums it means there is new posts. If it is lit, then there are new posts, if not, then there aren't any. If they're beside a thread it means there are new posts. If there are no new posts then there will be no arrow beside the thread. The one in the bottom left of a member's profile tells if the member is online or not. Lit means online, unlit means not browsing the forums.
hhThis didn't answer all of my questions. What do I do?
If you look around the site you should probably be able to find the answer. Please send me a Private Message with your question so I can find an answer to it and add it here.
Krystin, it's 2:11am. I can't see straight. Dunno if it's the hours I spent on this damn FAQ, or the vodka that let me spend hours on this damn FAQ. Either way, it's done.
I made some changes to your rep thing since it was lacking some info. Also a few things that are missing, referal links, custom bb tags and irc i don't have time to add these atm but they are somethign to work on. ~Carnage
