FAQ
WIG1. What is Gmail?
Gmail (http://www.gmail.com) is Google (http://www.google.com)'s webmail service. It is currently only a beta, and is invatation only. It offers the latest in spam filtering, a totally different approach to organizing e-mails, and the usual power and simplicity that Google offers interface wize.

GWDIS2. Great, where do I sign?
It is invatation only. Most of the topics on this board are invitations being given away. Simply post your e-mail address in one of them and you should recieve one shortly.

SWAPGTA3. So why are people giving them away?
They are being given away for 2 reasons. 1) People are nice. OMG WHAT A CONCEPT. 2) The link asking you to invite people is rather pushy.

TGNHDIUI4. Thats great, now how do I use it?
Well, if you can't figure this one out, there's a help page. Thats not what this FAQ is for.

Q45. Why do some people have more than one? Isn't inviting yourself abuse of power?
I'll abuse you boy! No, its not an abuse of power, you can invite whomever you want, even if it is you or your alter ego. There are many uses for a Gmail account other than just mail, which are outlined later in this document.

Q56. How do I invite people?
There will be a link in the main interface that prompts you to invite people.

Q67. When do I get invites, and how many will I get?
You will get them after a while of using your account. The more you invite, the more you get.

Q78. Wah! I want gmail now. I'm gonna make a topic begging for it.
Please don't, there are plenty of nice people, and if you're worried about not getting it, put your e-mail in several topics.

Q89. Whee! I just got it. Now I'm gonna spam my address all over this board.
Please don't. Noone cares if you have an original name, or if you have gmail. More of us are simply account hoarding than anything.

Q910. Great. I've got a 1GB e-mail account, and all I've done so far is cause a bunch of people the hassle of updating their contacts. What else can it do?
Well, the geeks and hackers out there have done many a thing. You could...
Use it as a filesystem (http://richard.jones.name/google-hacks/gmail-filesystem/gmail-filesystem.html)
Use it as a blog (http://ion.gluch.org.mx/files/Hacks/gallina/)
Use an application for it (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gmailerxp/)
Get a KDE Systray to check it (http://sourceforge.net/projects/kcheckgmail/)
Get a WindowsXP Systray to check it (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gnotifier/)
Check it from your mobile (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gmail-mobile/)

Or, write your own Super K-Rad Gmail app with:
PHP (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gmail-lite/)
Python (http://sourceforge.net/projects/libgmail/)
Java (http://sourceforge.net/projects/jgmail/)
The .NET Framework (http://sourceforge.net/projects/gmail-api/)

Q1011. What about http://gmail-is-too-creepy.com/ ?
Yes, its true. There are measures you can take, like not sending personal info to your Gmail, and using encryption like PGP freeware: http://www.pgp.com/downloads/freeware/index.html can keep anything else private. Use internet common sense, and know anything can possibly be logged.

Q1112. How do I access Gmail with Opera?
Gmail doesn't support Opera yet (ask for it at GMail Suggestions (http://services.google.com/inquiry/gmail_suggest/)) but it works fine in Opera 7.60 preview which you can download at:
http://snapshot.opera.com/windows/w760p1.html
http://snapshot.opera.com/
(it's still a preview so don't install it in the same folder as your current opera version)

Start O7.6 , go to gmail.com , click sign in anyway , sign in and enjoy Gmail in Opera.

i barely have one GB on my comp anymore. Hook me up with a Gmail account dude.

Nice faq though i can't wait till Gmail is released to the public. But then it will probably needed to be paid for because it is in such high demand.

Personaly, I hate betas, they're very buggy and all, and I won't download 7.60 beta. Luckily, Andrew Gregory has presented the temporary Proxomitron (http://www.scss.com.au/family/andrew/o7/gmail/) solution for those that are happy with Opera 7.5x. I love his solution, it's so nice and easy...

Also I have more gmail invites if you run out. I've given out about 15 or so from my one account (it seems to magically refill to six invites every few days O.o). You can contact me at Alternity@gmail.com

I currently have Gmail and love it. True with every new program there are bugs but they are not that noticeable at all

Gmail beta has no bugs that I've encountered. It's great. PM me for an invite.

I have 18 invites but I'm not giving them out... only to people I actually know in real life. Sorry. They seem to replenish themselves occassionally, which is nice.

Attention: Stop chatting. This is PC Tech, not spam and chat.

As you were.

I like Gmail, expect the fact that I can't EVER delete a message. Because like, there are some messages that I don't want others finding out if by some means they get onto my gmail account. (No, not porno.)

PS: I have like, 7 invites, but you all can suck my cock; they're mine.

there's a trash, semjia. You can delete messages by moving them to trash and pressing 'delete forever'

Okay, everyone has invites, great. I would prefer it if people who wanted them requested them here, rather than 90% of the board come into this thread to post "lol i haev inviets to" just because they can.

White_Hindu
17th September 2004, 12:53 PM
Is the invite a trial where you have to start paying after a certain date or is it free for everyone who got an invite? need reply ASAP

omega

Has anyone got anything to add to this FAQ?
BTW - I will add all the people who will be inviting people on the first post. So it will be easy for people to know the inviters.

Can you send me an invite please, so I can check it out. Thanks.

Perhaps an email to send an invite to would help... -omega
