In this thread you'll find some tricks and tips for KOC gameplay, don't consider these the way to play KOC. Everybody has his own strategy and way of playing. Just see them as some advise to enforce your strategy.

Selling weapons to buy upgrades, the "Hidden Sell"

Selling off weapons is a risky bussiness, especially when you have to sell off large amounts which will load your account up with unseen amounts of gold for your enemies to steal. It would not be uncommon if you were attacked just when you sold off and lose tons of gold. Therefor, use the "Hidden Sell" technique. Simply wait untill rank update time (exactly 5 past the hour) to sell your weapons off. At this time, attack pages are not showing up for a few moments. (You get the "Please wait... Rankings are being updated" warning). Now you are invissible to others. Only enemies that have you logged in their attack log would be able to attack you. So to be completely safe, use 2 browser windows. One for selling of weapons, and one for buying the upgrades.

Rush Attack

When you buy upgrades, it is best that you buy them with your TBG (Turn Based Gold) or with gold from your attacks rather than from banking. This isn't always so easy. The first upgrade(s) you should be able to purchase just from saving your TBG. But sometime it will just not be possible anymore, so you'll have to use saved gold from attacks to buy the more expensive upgrades. There is one danger, getting attacked yourself and lose your money. To prevent this, use the "Rush Attack" technique. Simply open about 6 Kings of Chaos windows and log in to your account 6 times. On the first window, go to the Armory where you buy your upgrade. On the other 5 pages, go to the attack page and find a suitable target for every page (so you have 5 targets). When you found a target, go to the target's statspage and click 'Attack', no fill in the 15 turns you use to make your attack but don't attack yet. If you did this for all five pages, simply attack all five on a row. Now go to your armory page and buy the upgrade. You can do this with more then 6 windows if the upgrade is more expensive but keep in mind that the more windows you use, the more errors that could come up. Also it depends on the memory of your PC and the speed of the KoC servers how many windows you can open up. For the most expensive upgrades, this technique can't be used anymore. You'll have to bank for those.

Mass-attack safe

Mass-attacks are large scale coordinated attacks launched by alliances to damage the enemy's defense weapons and kill the enemy's soldiers, spies and sentries (which reduces your TBG). There is a way to protect yourself from this event. The casualties calculation (of soldiers) is based on the amount of soldiers fighting when you are attacked. These are your trained defense soldiers/mercenaries and untrained soldiers/mercenaries. To keep this amount as low as possible, just train all your soldiers to attack specialists and keep only as much defense specialists as you have defense weapons (or a little bit more in stock). And the best part is, if you suspect to be mass attacked are a mass attack is going on, you can quickly make all your trained defense soldiers untrained again and train them to attack specialists. This way your weapons are not used and will not be damaged.

Another technique is to only use trained defense mercenaries to arm your defense weapons and train all your TBG producing soldiers to attack specialists. This way you won't lose any gold producing units. (With this technique you won't be able to protect your weapons from being damaged though)

Also always keep your spy/sentry force small to prevent many casualties but keep your Spy and Sentry Rating high enough by making sure your spies/sentries are equiped with tools.

Stealing maximum amount of gold

To steal maximum amount of gold from someone, always look for an army size equal or larger then yours. Also always use 15 attack turns. A nice trick is to make your attacks always on/after 30 min past the hour or 3 min past the hour. This is when the gold comes in and you'll be the first to steal it.

Buying mercenaries

Whether you buy attack, defense or untrained mercenaries, always know that the more you buy, the more casualties your army will substain when attacking or being attacked upon. No need to make sure 25% of your army are mercenaries. Buy just enough and just not too few...

Probe Attacks

Whenever you failed to spy on an enemy or were unaible to recover his/her Defense Action, launch a "Probe Attack" to know his counter damage. A probe attack is a 1 turn attack upon your enemy just to know his counter damage. Counter damage is not Defense Action! It is the actual damage your enemy's forces inflict when defending. The enemy's counter damage can be found in attack reports or your Attack Log. This is roughly estimated to be 2/3 of the DA. Probe attacks also have a cost, you'll have damage to your weapons and casualties like the result of any other normal attack.

Upgrade charts/tools

Upgrade charts allow you to buy your upgrades without losing any Strike/Defense Action. These charts are based on one weapon type but the advantage is they are extremely easy to use. You can download the upgrade charts at:

Upgrade tools do the same but are based on all weapon types and are extremely precise. They are a little bit more difficult to use but are very handy. They can be found here:

NOTE:
All weapons must be armed by same kind of soldiers (Trained or Untrained).
Do not use weapons who are not armed by soldiers in the calculation (If you have more weapons than soldiers)
Weapon strength = First number of the total weapon strength. (For example when your weapons are damaged and have 2389/2560, use the 2389)

SA Calculation

Calculate your weapon strength for each type of weapon you have, using this formula:
(number of weapons x weapon strength)

Example:

You have 2 weapons of strength 2560 and 7 weapons of strength 640
(2 x 2560) = 5120
(7 x 640) = 4480

Now make the sum of those weapon strengths

Example:

5120 + 4480 = 9600

Multiply the outcome by A:
(A = 5 if your weapons are armed by trained soldiers)
(A = 4 if your weapons are armed by untrained soldiers)

Example:

Your weapons are hold by trained soldiers
9600 x 5 = 48000

Add 5 for every unarmed trained soldier and 4 for every unarmed untrained soldier you have left

Example:

You have 120 unarmed untrained soldiers and 10 unarmed trained soldiers
48000 + ((120 x 4) + (10 x 5)) = 48000 + (480 + 50) = 48000 + 530 = 48530

Multiply the outcome by the Siege Technology factor:
(1+ (0.333 x B))
(B = Number of your current Siege Technology level)
(B = 0 for None, 1 for Flaming arrows, 2 for Ballistas, 3 for Battering Ram,
4 for Ladders, 5 for Trojan Horse, 6 for Catapults, 7 for War Elephants, 8 for Siege Towers,
9 for Trebuchets, 10 for Black Powder, 11 for Dynamite, 12 for Cannons)
---> Note: Always round up to .333 .667 and .000

Example:

You have Catapults
48530 x (1 + (0.333 x 6)) = 48530 x (1 + 1.98) = 48530 x 2.998 = 48530 x 3.000 (Rounded up) = 145590

The SA in the example = 145590
For Orcs multiply the final DA by 1.25 (so for Orcs the final DA would be 97060 x 1.25 = 181988)

DA Calculation

Calculate your weapon strength for each type of weapon you have using this formula:
(number of weapons x weapon strength)

Example:

You have 2 weapons of stregth 2560 and 7 weapons of strength 640

Multiply the outcome by the Fortification factor:
(1+(0.25 x B))
(B = Number of your current Fortification level)
(B = 0 for Camp, 1 for Stockade, 2 for Rabid Pitbulls, 3 for Walled town, 4 for Towers,
5 for Battlements, 6 for Portcullis, 7 for Boiling Oil, 8 Trenches,9 for Moat, 10 for Drawbridge,
11 for Fortress, 12 for Stronghold, 13 for Palace, 14 for Keep, 15 for Citadel, 16 for Hand of God)

Example:

You have Boiling Oil
48530 x (1 + (0.25 x 7)) = 48530 x (1 + 1.75) = 48530 x 2.75 = 133458

The DA in the example = 133458
For Dwarves multiply the final DA by 1.25 (so for Dwarves the final DA would be 133458 x 1.25 = 166823)

Spy/Sentry Rating Calculation

Calculate your total tool strength

Example:

You have two strength 15 and four strength 8 tools
(2 x 15) + (4 x 8) = 30 + 32 = 62

Number of spies minus total quantity of tools

Example:

You have 100 spies/sentries and you have two strength 15 and four strength 8 tools
100 - (2 + 4) = 100 - 6 = 94

Make the sum of those two outcomes

62 + 94 = 156

Multiply this number by your Spy Level Factor (= 2^Current Spy Level)

Example:

You have Spy Level 4
156 x (2^4) = 156 x 16 = 2496

This number is your current Spy/Sentry Rating.
NOTE: If you play the race Elves, you'll have to multiply this number by 1.25 because Elves have a Spy Bonus.

Example:

You play Elves
2496 x 1.25 = 3120

When to upgrade?

These charts show you when to upgrade without losing any SA/DA. These charts are for ALL races. These conditions must always be true:
You can only have the weapon(s) of strength 2560/2560 in your armory.
Your weapons must be armed by TRAINED soldiers.
